Virtues and Complete Method of the Prayer of Glorification (Salat-ut-Tasbih)
There is a special kind of comfort in knowing that a lifetime of sins — the ones we remember and the ones we have long forgotten — can still be washed away through nothing more than four humble units of prayer (Rak'ahs) offered with a sincere heart. Among the voluntary prayers that carry this extraordinary promise of forgiveness, the Prayer of Glorification (Salat-ut-Tasbih) holds a place of its own. Numerous benefits and immense rewards of this prayer are mentioned in the sayings of the Prophet ﷺ (Hadith), and scholars state that once a person truly learns of its excellence and greatness, no one abandons it except someone who is lazy in matters of religion. This guide explains its full virtue, its exact method rak'ah by rak'ah, the masalas connected to it — including what to do about a forgetful-prostration correction (Sajdah-e-Sahw) if a mistake happens — and two related prayers offered for the fulfillment of needs — Salat-ul-Hajah and Salat-ul-Asrar.
QUICK ANSWER
Salat-ut-Tasbih is a four-rak'ah voluntary prayer containing 300 recitations of a specific formula of glorification (Tasbih) — 75 in each rak'ah — after which Allah Almighty forgives the previous and later, old and new, small and great, hidden and apparent sins of the one who performs it sincerely. The Prophet ﷺ advised offering it daily if possible, or at the very least once in a lifetime.

Why the Prayer of Glorification (Salat-ut-Tasbih) Is Such a Highly Virtuous Prayer
Salat-ut-Tasbih is a highly virtuous prayer. Numerous benefits and immense rewards of this prayer are mentioned in the sayings of the Prophet ﷺ (Hadith). Scholars state that after learning about the excellence and greatness of this prayer, no one abandons it except a person who is lazy in religious matters.
It is mentioned in the Prophetic narrations (Ahadith) that Allah Almighty forgives all the sins of the person who performs Salat-ut-Tasbih: previous and later sins, old and new sins, those committed knowingly and unknowingly, small and great sins, hidden and apparent — all are forgiven.
After teaching this prayer, the Holy Prophet ﷺ said: if possible, perform it once daily; if that is not possible, then once a week; if that is not possible, then once a month; if that also is not possible, then once a year; and if even that is not possible, then at least once in a lifetime. (General books of Hadith)
Method of the Prayer of Glorification (Salat-ut-Tasbih) — Hanafi Method
The method of Salat-ut-Tasbih that is commonly practiced is narrated in Tirmidhi Sharif through the narration of Hazrat Abdullah bin Mubarak, may Allah be pleased with him.
Step 1 — Intention, the Opening Proclamation (Takbir), and the Opening Supplication (Thana)
Every effort has been made to reproduce the Arabic text below with its correct diacritical marks (Harakat). Even so, if any error remains in the vowel marks or wording, please read the Arabic yourself and correct it as needed before relying on it, and we ask Allah Almighty to forgive any unintentional mistake.
Make the intention, say Allahu Akbar, and recite the opening supplication (Thana):
سُبْحَانَكَ اللّٰهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ وَتَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ وَتَعَالٰى جَدُّكَ وَلَاۤ إِلٰهَ غَيْرُكَ
After that, recite the following formula of glorification (Tasbih) 15 times:
سُبْحَانَ اللهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَلَاۤ إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَاللهُ أَكْبَرُ
Step 2 — Recitation (Qira'at) and Ten Glorifications (Tasbihat)
Then recite A'udhu Billah, Bismillah, Surah Al-Fatihah, and any other Surah, and again recite this Tasbih 10 times.
Step 3 — Bowing (Ruku'), Standing Upright (Qawmah), and Both Prostrations (Sajdahs)
Go into Ruku', and after saying "Subhana Rabbiyal Azim," recite the Tasbih 10 times.
Stand up from Ruku', and after saying "Sami' Allahu liman hamidah," recite the Tasbih 10 times.
In the first Sajdah, after saying "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la," recite the Tasbih 10 times.
Sit up from Sajdah (Jalsah) and recite the Tasbih 10 times.
In the second Sajdah, again recite the Tasbih 10 times.
In this manner, complete four units of prayer (Rak'ahs). Each Rak'ah contains 75 Tasbihat, and the four Rak'ahs together contain 300 Tasbihat.
Important Masalas Related to Salat-ut-Tasbih
If, due to any mistake, Sajdah-e-Sahw becomes obligatory in this prayer, then Sajdah-e-Sahw should be performed, but the Tasbih should not be recited in those Sajdahs.
If at any position fewer than ten glorifications (Tasbihat) are recited due to forgetfulness, then the remaining count should be completed at the next available place of Tasbih. For example, if one forgets during bowing (Ruku'), it should be completed in Sajdah and not in Qawmah, because Qawmah is brief. If one forgets in the first Sajdah, it should be completed in the second Sajdah and not in Jalsah. (Radd-ul-Muhtar)
Standing straight after Ruku' is called Qawmah, and sitting between the two Sajdahs is called Jalsah.
Counting the Tasbih on fingers is disliked (Makruh); it is better to count in the heart, otherwise by pressing the fingers.
This prayer may be offered at any non-disliked time. It is preferable to offer it before the Noon Prayer (Zuhr), i.e., between the optional prayer (Sunnah) and the obligatory prayer (Fard) of Zuhr. (Alamgiri, Radd-ul-Muhtar)
Method and Virtue of the Prayer of Need (Salat-ul-Hajah)
When a person has a need, he should perform two or four units of prayer (Rak'ahs) of Salat-ul-Hajah.
It is mentioned in Hadith: in the first Rak'ah, recite Surah Al-Fatihah followed by the Verse of the Throne (Ayat-ul-Kursi) three times. In the remaining three Rak'ahs, recite Surah Al-Fatihah followed by Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas, once each.
The reward of this prayer is equivalent to performing four Rak'ahs on the Night of Decree (Laylat-ul-Qadr). The pious elders state that they performed this prayer and saw their needs fulfilled.
After completing the prayer, one should supplicate, sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ (Durood Sharif) at the beginning and end.
Prayer of Secrets (Salat-ul-Asrar / Salat-e-Ghausiyah)
For the fulfillment of needs, a well-known and tested prayer is Salat-ul-Asrar, also known as Salat-e-Ghausiyah. It is narrated by scholars such as Mulla Ali Qari, Shaykh Abdul Haq Muhaddith Dehlvi, and other great scholars from Sayyiduna Ghaus-e-Azam, may Allah be well pleased with him.
Method of Salat-ul-Asrar
After performing the optional prayers (Sunnah) of the Sunset Prayer (Maghrib), offer two Rak'ahs of voluntary prayer (Nafl). In each Rak'ah, after Surah Al-Fatihah, recite Surah Al-Ikhlas eleven times.
After the closing greeting (Salam), praise Allah Almighty, then send Durood upon the Noble Prophet ﷺ eleven times.
Then recite the following supplication eleven times.
يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ أَغِثْنِي وَامْدُدْنِي فِي قَضَاءِ حَاجَتِي يَا قَاضِيَ الْحَاجَاتِ
O Messenger of Allah, O Prophet of Allah, help me and aid me in the fulfillment of my need, O Fulfiller of needs.
After that, walk eleven steps towards the direction of Iraq, and at each step recite:
يَا غَوْثَ الثَّقَلَيْنِ وَيَا كَرِيمَ الطَّرَفَيْنِ أَغِثْنِي وَامْدُدْنِي فِي قَضَاءِ حَاجَتِي يَا قَاضِيَ الْحَاجَاتِ
O helper of jinn and mankind, O noble one of the two lineages, help me and aid me in the fulfillment of my need, O Fulfiller of needs.
Then supplicate to Allah Almighty through the means of Sayyiduna Ghaus-e-Azam, may Allah be well pleased with him. In shaa Allah, the desire will be fulfilled soon.
Statement of the Pious Elders
Imam Ajall Abu-l-Hasan Noor-ud-Din narrates in his famous book Bahjat-ul-Asrar that Sayyiduna Ghaus-e-Azam, may Allah be well pleased with him, said: "Whoever calls upon my name in difficulty, Allah removes his hardship. And whoever seeks Allah through me as a means, his need is fulfilled."
May Allah Almighty bless us all with the blessings of Sayyiduna Ghaus-e-Azam, may Allah be well pleased with him. Ameen.
Salat-ut-Tasbih asks for very little time compared to the forgiveness it carries — four rak'ahs and three hundred words of remembrance, weighed against sins of a lifetime. Even offering it once, with sincerity, is not a small thing. If this guide has helped make the method and its masalas clear, please share it with another sister who may benefit from it too.
